Question #1:

eating the sparrows - arent they edible?

I have 5 chickens and 1 cockerel, i free range them in my yard, there is always food around for my chickens.

Sparrows are a problem, they are attracted by the chick food, they come by groups of 10-30 birds and make gang attacks in anything they can eat, i have a fenced (for the chickens) vegetable garden, the sparrows ate my peas before i do. They are really invading my territory.

I will build a sparrow trap, its my turn on their game.

I want to eat them all. I will BBQ them all and swallow them and burp while drinking beer before i fart and laugh at them like a barbarian uncivilized crazy man that i am. I would feed them to my dog, if i had one.

Now, give me a reason, why shouldnt i eat sparrows, do you think they carry diseases or anything like that?

What do you think of eating sparrows?

Question #2:

How to make a garden for your rabbit?

I'm a rabbit owner who loves rabbits. I was considering making a fenced in area in my back yard and treating the soil, growing some vegetables for my rabbit as a little play area. I wanted to have most of the ground in the garden to be clover, a decent height fence and a wire fence just beneath it, so he can't dig out. I was just wondering...What should I have in my garden, ex.What kind of soil should I use? Can I grow some vegetables in it? Should I have a little water area? Just please give me some ideas on what I should do.
Just wanted to add...I'm not going to keep him out there unsupervised. He lives indoors. I just need a little outside play area for him.

Anyway, i want to plant, corn, bell peppers , zucchini, cauliflower, cucumbers (one row each), jalapeno, tomatoes and spinach (two rows each) strawberries (3 or 4 shorter rows), a few herbs and a row of blackberry's (to grow on trellis). I have had potted plants and helped out many family members with they're gardens so I have knowledge but never actually had one myself, about what size plot do i need for all of those plants?

Question #8:

Crop rotations - Can i move the soil instead of the crop?

I have 5 raised bed vegetable gardens. I want to rotate crops, but I don't want to move them from their usual location. (eg I want my broccoli to always be in bed#2)

Is there a reason (other than many wheel-barrel loads of work) I cannot move the soil instead?

I would explain why i want to do this but it is rather lengthy.

Question #9:

What plants (bulbs, vegetables, fruit, etc.) can you plant now for harvest in the fall?

I just moved to a property with beautiful gardens but I need to know when I should plant bulbs for spring and if there is anything I should know about gardening at this time of year. I live in Ontario, Canada.

Please help!

Question #10:

Are there any fruit or vegetable plants that I can grow indoors?

We do have a garden but we're plagued by squirrels so they would dig up the seeds. We also have a conservatory, but that alternates between being freezing cold and boiling hot so I don't think a plant could grow there.
Are there any fruit, vegetable or bean plants that I can grow indoors?

Question #11:

how far away from where one captures a snake do you have to go to release it, so that it does not return?

We often have to capture and release puffadders ( Bitis areitans arietans) and boomslangs (Dispholidus typus)from our vegetable garden and take them up the mountain behind us. How far do we need to to take them so that they do not return here?
for eg bees need to go 6ks or more mice and rats about 4

Question #12:

Can I eat these mushrooms?

I found a mushroom growing in my yard. It's a very well maintained yard, actually, the grass never has to be cut because the grass turns yellow and dies anyways, and dead birds and squirrels are fertilizing the new grass! Poor things... they die because of the horrid smell that my rafflesias have. BACK ON TOPIC: I found these mushrooms, but I don't know what they're called. I have no more vegetables left in my house, so I use crops from my "mystery garden". Here's the mushroom, but I don't know what it's called, also is it OK to eat? Click Here

I already made and ate a salad containing the mushroom, could I die?

Question #13:

How do I check irregular items at the museum?

I was helping a volunteer organization downtown planting a vegetable garden. I was able to take a shower at my friend's house nearby. I had brought my own equipment and couldn't keep it at my friends house. Anyhow, I decided to visit the history museum before going home. I was able to check my bag and my jacket, but not my gardening tools. So, I guess my question is: How do I get these hoes in check?

Question #14:

can Miracle Gro Rose Plant Food be used on Vegetables?

I have a vegetable garden and found a box of Rose Plant food. I was just curious if I could use it on vegetables because I do not have any roses where I live now.

Question #15:

How long does Round Up stay active in the soil?

I moved into a house on an acreage a few months ago that is over run with weeds. A lot of kochia, foxtail, russian and canadian thistle among others.

Along both sides of large overgrown caragana (sp) bushes were once vegetable gardens. One on the southside of the house (north of the bushes with about another 25ft of mixed grasses) is completely covered in canada thistle. Its about 15ft wide X 30ft long.

The second on the northside of the house, and south of the bushes is about 5ft wide and 20 ft long. It has a whole multitude of broadleaf weeds in it. Too many to mention, and way too many to pull.

Obviously I don't want to take out the bushes, but I do want to clear out the weeds and replant with lawn seed. So I had planned on leaving a 24-36" buffer to the bushes, pulling what I can. I have a 5 gallon pump/wand sprayer and a 1/2 gallon pump sprayer so I can get fairly close and direct. Is that enough or too much of a buffer?

Also how long does Round Up Spray stay within the soil once the plants treated have died and been removed?

I have the the Round Up Poison Ivy Concentrate - which I think is double the strength of regular Round Up - should I mix the same strength or go half?

Thanks all!

I

Question #16:

How do you cope when you are nothing like your family?

I'm sure every teenager feels this way...

I'm a vegetarian, I just have this thing against eating meat...I'm not a full vegan though because do eat some dairy products. But my family (or more specifically, my mom) likes having steak or pork-chops every night...stuff that I would never eat. I love gardening, it is my favorite thing to do...and my family wants to get rid of all the flowers because they're annoyed with all the bees. I love the winter, rain, and snow...my parents moved us out to Arizona in a city that it gets maybe 3 inches a year and it never goes below 50 degrees (usually, there are those rare occasions). I feel like I am the exact opposite of my family. I love my family, but I just wish they would take ME and MY LIFESTYLE/PERSONALITY in consideration. I can cope with Arizona, my mom had promised to send me up to Utah during winter to visit family up there (and Utah is amazing in the winter in my opinion), but some things...just the little things, I would appreciate if they considered them more, like maybe letting me continue to grow my garden and having vegetables and fruits along with their usual meat dinners. I hate sounding like a brat or someone who doesn't appreciate their family, but I really would like to be taken in consideration more, I'm the "minority" in the family so most of the time I guess I feel ignored or that my opinions and likes don't matter?
